When it comes to phone scams, we feel it's important that you protect yourself and your personal information. Here's a real story from a Motor City Member who was able to avoid this threat.

I received a call this morning at my home just after 6 am with someone claiming to be from VISA. They asked me if I had used my card to transfer cash to an account in India in the last few minutes. I told them no and that I had never transferred money on my VISA.

They went on to tell me that they were going to cancel my card and send me a new one. He then went on to tell me my home address and asked me to confirm it. He had the correct home address.

He then asked me to confirm if I still had possession of my card. At this point alarm bells were going off and I told him that it was irrelevant if I had my card, that he should cancel my old one and send me a new one. He insisted that they needed to know if the card had been stolen or if just the number was compromised. I did check and I told him that I did have possession of my card.

He then started asking me about the three digit number on the back of my card.

I told him that I wasn’t giving him any information from my card, and that he should cancel my card and send me a new one and that I would call VISA back when I got up. He started to say something about how he didn’t ask me for any information on my card and that I had to deal with this now or I could be responsible for paying the VISA when my next bill came in and he wanted to make sure there were no fraudulent charges.

At this point I hung up on him.

I have since called the 800 number on the back of my card and they confirmed that the call was fraudulent.

This was a very good scam. They knew my name telephone number and correct home address. They started out simple, tried to build trust and were slowly working their way to the information they wanted.

There were a couple of red flags. The first is obvious, VISA probably isn’t going to call you at 6 am. They would reject the transaction and lower the limit on your card and wait for you to call them. (I confirmed this with VISA when I called). The second was that they identified themselves as calling from VISA not XYZ bank/credit union VISA. Any time I have called a credit card company or they have called me they always identify which FI they are from, it is part of the script. Third, they don’t need to know if I have my card to cancel it and if they call me they should already have all the information on the card that they need to cancel it. I had hung up by this time but it would have been interesting to see what exactly he would have asked for next.

Motor City Employees Give Back Expand/Collapse

It’s that time of year again. When we often find ourselves rushing around the city looking for the perfect gift for our loved ones. It’s also the time of year that many of us look deep in our wallets and donate to the charitable organizations that are near and dear to our hearts. One thing we pride in ourselves is the generosity of our employees. Not only do we give back when people need it most but many of us volunteer throughout the year.

This year, our branch staff came together to donate to our first annual Holiday Giving Campaign. We weren’t surprised that everyone came together to give back to the same cause, but what was a pleasant surprise, was that our CEO, Charles Janisse offered to match up to $1,000 of our employee contributions. I’m proud to say that we met that challenge head on and were able to raise over $2,800, which included, the employee contribution as well as the sales from the I ‘heart’ my CU t-shirts and Scully the Skunk CU Collectable. The spirit of the season is definitely thriving at Motor City.

As we sit back and relax over the next couple weeks, there’s much to be proud of and thankful for. Giving back to the community is something we just do. We don’t always broadcast it to the world, even-though some people say that we should more often. It’s nice to sometimes make a quite donation of money or time without looking for that pat on the back. So if you see any Motor City employees out over the next year giving their time, know that it’s our pleasure and just what we do here at Motor City. International Credit Union Day Celebrates the Authentic Difference

On October 20, 2016, credit unions around the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day (ICU Day).

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, offering the same services as other financial institutions, but with a people-first philosophy. Since 1948, on the third Thursday of every October, credit unions have celebrated the principles that make credit unions the best financial partners of people all over the world. “The authentic difference,” this year’s ICU Day theme, zeroes in on what makes credit unions different from banks, fintech startups and other financial institutions—our principles.

Credit unions all over the world have operated according to the same core principles since the 1850s, when a group of weary German workers formed the world’s first credit union by banding together to provide affordable credit to each other.

These principles are derived from the 7 cooperative principles, shared by all cooperatives. They are:

1. Democratic Control
One member = One vote. Whether you have $5 or $5 million, your voice is equal.

2. Open and Voluntary Membership
Members are connected by a bond of association, fostering a sense of community.

3. Non-Discrimination
Credit unions are open to all without regard for race, orientation, nationality, sex, religion, gender, or politics.

4. Service to Members
Credit unions are ranked No. 1 in service in numerous surveys, because they exist to serve members, not profit.

5. Distribution to Members
Credit unions return all profits to their members through dividends, lower fees, better savings rates, and improved services.

6. Building Financial Stability
Credit unions are historically stable organizations. They’re owned by the people they serve, so they don’t take unnecessary risks.

7. Cooperation Among Cooperatives
Credit unions and cooperatives share the same principles. Together, they amplify each other’s good works.

8. Social Responsibility
Credit unions strive for social justice by committing to strengthening their communities and helping people of modest means.

9. Ongoing Education
Credit unions prioritize financial education for their members, employees, and communities as part of their pursuit of social justice.

This is why we celebrate ICU Day at Motor City Community Credit Union. We think ideas like people before profit, social responsibility, and financial education improve lives. Do you love us? I mean, really love us? Well we want to find out and we promise it won’t take longer than a press of a button.

2016 is a year of learning for Motor City and we want to know what you think. During the month of June, if you visited a branch you had the opportunity to fill out a member survey. We’ve collected the responses and are reviewing the data but now we want to know a little more or less, depending on how you look at it. To do this, we’ve enlisted the help of Finnish company, Happy or Not, to collect your responses. Clients like McDonald’s, Nike and Ikea are already using Happy or Not to measure customer satisfaction. Most recently, the Finnish Olympic team brought a Smiley Terminal with them to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. It was important for the team to have a positive atmosphere and Happy or Not was able to provide the team’s Sports Psychologist with accurate data they could review and speak to at daily team meetings. We are confident that we will get a different view of the in-branch experience, which will turn into a more positive experience for you, our member.

I bet you’re wondering how it works? Well let me tell you and I promise it’s really easy. All you have to do is read the question on the Smiley Terminal to know how to respond. Then, press the button that best expresses how you feel. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to provide your feedback. At the end of each week, we’ll look at the data collected, do some of our own research and provide your feedback to our executive team. So whether you’re happy or not, we want to know. If you have more detailed feedback you wish to discuss with us, please speak to an Assistant Branch Manager who will also be able to let us know your concern.

Don’t be afraid to tell us how you really feel, because we want to know. The terminal will be making its rounds too. Keep an eye peeled at each branch as we move it around every month. If you have any questions about the terminal, please feel free to ask an Assistant Branch Manager who will be able to answer questions you might have.

We understand that in today’s market, options are everywhere and that includes where you do your banking. So if you’re tired of filling someone else’s pocket and would rather fill your own, I invite you to have a look at the five main ways that a Credit Union is better than a bank.

  1. Local Decision Making

    This is probably this biggest advantage to being a member at Motor City. If you have a question, concern or a product being set up for you, the decisions can be quick. Our administrative staff is close by so if our Member Service Representatives (MSRs) or Financial Service Representatives (FSRs) don’t have an answer for you, we can get one. Sometimes life happens and when it does, you need help fast. Providing the very best in personal service, we take the time to get to know you and help you achieve your goals.
  2. You are not just a number

    You might have a member number, but that’s not how we see you. We know your name because you are a part of our family, the Motor City family. When we are setting up a product for you, like a mortgage, we look at more than just the number from your credit score. While this plays an important part of the decision, sometimes we understand that you need a little help. It’s important to us that we treat you as we would like to be treated. We can work out flexible rates and payment schedules. Helping our members do more with their mortgages, loans, credit cards and credit lines.
  3. You are an owner

    If you are unfamiliar of how the Credit Union system works, let’s give you a quick look. Simply put, you own part of the Credit Union. When you open an account you have to place $100 in a share account. This money stays there and entitles you to help shape the future of Motor City. Every year you get your say on who is on the Board of Directors by voting.   4. The ability to implement products and services as you need them

    Did you know that a Credit Union was the first financial institution to allow a woman to borrow under her own name, the first to let you deposit a cheque by phone and the first to offer a debit card. We’re small enough that we can change as you need us. We’re also connected with a larger Credit Union network that shares ideas and technology. We understand that the world is changing fast and it’s important to us to change with it.
  5. We give back to the community

    I know what you’re thinking. Almost every company gives back to a community. We are different because your money stays local. When you bank at a big bank, your money ends up somewhere else. By banking with a Credit Union, you can rest easy that as we grow, so does how much we give back. Not only that but each employee also lives here and they support our community in other ways too. November 11 Expand/Collapse

November 11th is always a time to remind ourselves about what our veterans have and continue to sacrifice so we are able to live in freedom. Traditionally at Motor City Community Credit Union, we have used this time as a team-building day with the entire staff. We've done things like curling, engage with a motivational speaker and a scavenger hunt to name a few. This year, we decided to break up into smaller groups and do activities in the community.

Each group was tasked with a few simple suggestions: think of a fun and unique team building exercise, savour a delicious lunch and do something good for the community. The teams, ranging from 8 to 10 employees each got a chance to decide what they wanted to do with the day. Many ideas were tossed around, but ultimately the teams landed on the following items: planting seedlings at Point Pelee National Park, making a donation to the Welcome Shelter Centre for Women and The Windsor Youth Centre, donating toys to the pediatric ward at Windsor Regional Hospital and attending the Remembrance Day memorial service at Windsor City Hall. The day was filled with many positive moments and most of the teams even unexpectedly came together at the Remembrance Day memorial service.

Even-though we try to do our best and make a positive impact on the community every day, sometimes we can take it for granted. By taking a day to reflect and do something good was very important to the employees at MCCCU because we too are part of this community and we want to make sure that our community prospers.

Being a Motor City Community Credit Union employee isn't just about going to work every day and doing our job. It's about knowing that our members are a part of the same community we live in. Giving back isn't something we do only once a year, though it's nice to take one day to recognize all the good that is done within our community to make it a better place. It’s our job to acknowledge those who have shaped it to what it is today and continue to make this a strong place live and work for the future generations.
